Sufjan Stevens
Biography
Sufjan Stevens is an American born experimential indie-folk
artist. Born in Detroit, Michigan on July 1st 1975 into a
caring family - which is now strongly reflected in his lyrics -
Sufjan started exploring music at a very young age and can play
several instruments including the Guitar, Drums and the Banjo.
His brother, Marzuki Stevens has featured on two of Sufjan
Stevens albums.
Sufjan began his musical career in a series of bands
including Marzuki and the Danielson Famile. He released his
first solo Album, A Sun Came under the Asthmatic Kitty Records
label while still at school. After finishing school, Sufjan
Stevens moved to New York City where he composed his second
album, Enjoy Your Rabbit, a collection of songs influenced by
the animals of the Zodiac.
After these albums brought him some fame and recognition,
Sufjan spoke of his new project, he was planning to make an
album for each of the United States' 50 states. So far he has
released the state-titled Michigan and Illinois albums in 2004
and 2005 respectively.
In 2006, Sufjan Stevens brought out Songs for Christmas, and
aptly titled album with a collection of 5 CDs containing
Christmas songs written by him and a selection of covers which
he has been recording since 2001.
