Which is the Best Sufjan Stevens Album?
Sufjan Stevens is arguably one of the Indy music’s most talented performers, but which album is his best? Here
is my opinion.
Sufjan is a prolific songwriter and plays several instruments. His first release to generate public reaction was
"Enjoy Your Rabbit" in 1981. It was based around the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.
Then is 2003, he announced plans to record an album for each of the fifty states. His first release of this
series was Michigan which is his home state. It was well received and was followed by
Seven Swans in 2004.
Then in 2005,
Illinois was debuted
which become one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the decade and my personal favorite! It won
several Album of the Year polls which further supports the excellence of the music.
He runs the gamut on characters in this album, ranging from John Wayne Gacy to Superman to Abraham Lincoln and
Carl Sandburg.
In 2006 he released two more albums but they were not part of the US states series. However, both of them have
been well received and are quite popular as well.
Since Sufjan Stevens announced his plans to record 50 State themed albums he has only released three of
them.
While Stevens is a very prolific songwriter, I have my doubts as to whether or not he will actually ever be able
to complete this series. Guess only time will tell.
No biggie either way Sufjan. Just keep producing albums like Illinoise and this particular fan will be very
happy and devoted.
